The Deanery Days this year will focus on safeguarding the vulnerable in our congregations. As Episcopalians we are committed to providing a healthy, safe, and nurturing environment where, by God's grace, the full work of the Church can be carried out. The training of Safeguarding God's People serves to educate churches and ministries to keep children, youth, and adults safe from sexual abuse while at church or church related activities. It teaches how exploitation and harassment occur, the awareness we need to prevent such occurrences, and - should exploitation or harassment occur - how to respond. These Deanery Days are intended for every member of our congregations. Below is the list of who is required to renew these trainings every 5 years. Who needs this training? · All paid employees · All vestry members (if vestry of the whole, Jr. and Sr. Warden only) · Youth group directors · Sunday school directors · Lay Eucharistic Visitors · Anyone going into someone's home in any role related to the church · Worship leaders · Anyone who transports children, youth, or vulnerable adults We hope that everyone will be able to attend the entire day, but if not, please note: · Both morning sessions are required to receive certification of Safeguarding for Children · Both afternoon sessions are required to receive certification of Safeguarding for Adults If you cannot attend the Deanery Days in your deanery, don't stress - you are welcome to participate in any of the other three opportunities around the diocese! The schedule is as follows: Western Deanery Days on February 29th register HERE > Southwestern Deanery Days on March 7th register HERE > Central Deanery Days on March 21st register HERE > Eastern Deanery Days on March 28th register HERE > More Episcopal News Service Crazy Chili Farm’s sales, members’ donations scale-up Arizona church’s outreach efforts February 12, 2020 Episcopal News Service Like many Episcopal churches nationwide, Mesa’s Church of the Transfiguration engages in outreach, donating money to organizations that address food insecurity, provide educational assistance, support to women and children fleeing abusive situations and offer other essential social services. In 2006, responding to food insecurity in its own neighborhood where within a 5- or 6-mile radius 35,000 people live at or below the federal poverty line, rather than open a food pantry or run a soup kitchen, church members began collecting spare change in cups labeled “A Million Meals for Our Neighbors.” By consolidating members’ coins and making donations to existing feeding programs, Transfiguration has provided 1.4 million meals for its neighbors. “We do that by making grants to the agencies in our own neighborhood, like soup kitchens and box distribution programs, and when we can, we cover their bill with United Food Bank,” said Bill Robinson, a Transfiguration member. “By paying the food distribution agency rate, we pay a gross weighted average of about five cents a pound, regardless of the value of the food; it could be T-bone steak and it would be five cents a pound.” More Anglican News Service Bishop’s son deported from US to El Salvador, where he fears for his life February 12, 2020 Anglican Communion News Service The son of the Anglican bishop of El Salvador, who fled to the United States after being kidnapped and threatened in his home country, has been deported back there from the US, according to his father. Josue Alvarado Guerra, 34, was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after getting a flat tyre in Ohio in November, when police discovered he did not have proper immigration documents. Alvarado Guerra filed a petition for asylum but was denied, and he was sent back to El Salvador on 28 January. Bishop David Alvarado of the Diocese of El Salvador, which is part of the Anglican Church of Central America, said his son had to flee El Salvador because his life was in danger. He had been working as a taxi driver in Colón, just northwest of San Salvador, one of the most dangerous cities in a country with the world’s highest homicide rate. Alvarado Guerra was “threatened, kidnapped and persecuted by one of the largest gangs operating in the country” and forced to drive them around, according to his father. In a letter to Ohio Bishop Mark Hollingsworth Jr and others who have offered support, which his office shared with Episcopal News Service, Alvarado expressed a combination of fear, gratitude and happiness at his son’s return to El Salvador. He added that the danger to his son’s life is so great that he is still trying to make arrangements for him to live in another country.
